What is and why use a content managment system?

Content marketing

This should be a relatively easy blog post to write – after all, it’s being input to and broadcast from a content management system (CMS)!  A content management system is so much more than just a blog platform, though, and many business owners mistake the need for a CMS as a need for hosting blog postings.

The concept of a content management system has evolved tremendously in the past several years.  A well developed CMS can actually host your entire online enterprise, from static information pages through dynamic content such as storefronts, shopping carts, and customer contact forms.  Perhaps most importantly, all major CMS platforms have been integrated, either natively or with plug-ins, with social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

Gone are the days when you had to manage Twitter, Facebook, and your online presence separately.  The power of CMS resides in the ability of the platform to manage all of your online communication needs, including social media, in one package.

The investment in the time that it takes to set up an attractive, well managed site within a CMS is also shortened.  A well designed CMS will not only allow you to manage your communication needs, but give a non-technical person the ability to work within a framework that’s similar to a standard word processing package.

Check out the latest from CMS providers such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal.  Most standard CMS packages are open source, meaning that the CMS software itself doesn’t cost you anything. Customizing and developing your own web presence was never easier.
